INTERVIEW: Pedro Fernandes Brings Brazilian Male Model Style to South Florida


Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, male fitness model Pedro Fernandes has a striking look and muscular physique that naturally draws attention when he poses. In this exclusive interview, he shares with modelJOCK some of his best experiences as a model, and also discusses the difference between modeling in Miami, New York and Brazil.

How long have you been in the United States, and how do you like living in South Florida?
I have been here for two years or more. I enjoy living here because of the weather, it is better than in Sao Paulo for sure. When I moved to Miami, at first things were difficult, like learning where everything is. But there is the beach, clubs, restaurants, shopping, etc. I really like what's happening here.

How and when did you first get interested in modeling? Did you do it in Brazil too? 
In Brazil, my first official modeling experience, after being scouted, was in an agency test photo shoot. However, they were asking an expensive fee to build a modeling book. I had no money, so I didn't pursue it. I never really modeled there before coming to the United States.



Do you do other kinds of work too?
Yes, I do other kinds of work. I just graduated with my Masters Degree in International Business. I am working for a marketing firm here in Miami, in an area closely related to modeling and entertainment promotions.


You have an amazing portfolio. What have been your proudest or most exciting moments so far in the field of modeling?
On a recent photo shoot, I was a groom where the location was an historic and very scenic plantation. It was such a beautiful place to shoot. Another experience was a group model shoot where eight of us played homeless models addicted to fashion. It was shot in an alley in downtown Miami. It was a really interesting concept and fun to be apart of.




What is your fitness/workout/exercise regiment like? How about your diet?
I try to go to the gym four days per week to work on specific group parts in two day intervals. Each day I alternate from one muscle group to another, trying balance development  and intensity given to each muscle group.
For my diet, I don't eat any junk food, avoid fried foods, and eat a lot of protein. I eat the basic stuff, not a lot of carbohydrates before going to bed. Doing that is not good. The carbs go straight to the belly. 





What do you think are your best physical attributes? Is there any part of your body that you would like to change or aim to work on more?
My eyes and abs are my best physical attributes. However, I love my six pack. I like its curvature and lines, which show so successfully on camera. My legs are not as developed as I would like them to be. They do not develop or respond to work out as quickly as the rest of my body.




South Florida is one of the regions most associated with photo shoots and modeling in the United States. How would you describe the modeling scene there? 

First, yes you are right. I think Miami is a hot spot for modeling in this part of the country.  However it is very competitive. There are many very talented models here; male and female. One of the down sides is that there is a fluctuation of work from season to season. There is a lot of art and culture here to significantly contribute to the city's overall artistic identity.
I would recommend Miami to any aspiring model, but the decision should also depend on what they are interested in doing. Miami is very commercial; New York is more fashion. If they are seeking more commercial work, then Miami is where they should be.



How does the modeling scene and creative style differ in the United States compared to Brazil? 

In Brazil its a little more complicated because of the different styles used as a result of the diverse cultures in south America. The scene differs depending upon the region of Brazil; north is different from south, east from west. Here in the U.S. there is clear distinction between commercial and fashion. Again consider the New York starving fashion models compared to the glamorous chic Miami models.



What are your ultimate dreams and goals in terms of modeling?
My ultimate dream goal is to reach a point where I am the face of a respectable clothing or advertising campaign which is nationally or internationally exposed and I can be proud of.
In five to ten years I’d like to be professionally established, working hard and living happy. Right now I am an adventurer, moving around, somewhat transient. In the future I hope to have more accomplished and built for myself. Right now, I have modeling and acting. But I can see that a modeling career will not last as long as an acting career. For male actors the future is brighter, there is longevity. Lastly, I would perhaps like to maybe open an import/export company which in some way related to Brazil, allowing me to us my Masters Degree in International Business.

INTERVIEW: Dustin J. Bouchard, Male Model and Actor, on Being Multifaceted



Modeling and acting are naturally compatible careers. And it's a strategy for success for Dustin J. Bouchard, a 22-year-old male model and actor based in South Florida. In this EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW, Dustin shares his thoughts on both crafts.

How and when did you first get interested in modeling and acting? What do you like most about both careers?
I got interested about two years ago. I have always been a creative person. Some people suggested I try it. I did, fell in love with it and now it's all I want to do. I have always thought about it, but never thought it was a realistic possibility living up in Maine, where I'm from.
I love that modeling is like displaying art work, I have always been interested in nice art forms. Modeling is  essentially like showing off my personal art. Nice pictures make me feel a sense of accomplishment. I enjoy wearing new clothing, learn from different photographers, developing poses and experimenting with facial expressions. Right now I am trying the best I can to create the best photos possible. Acting is pure fun and pretense. I get to temporarily lose who I am to become someone else. It's great.



What have been your proudest or most exciting moments so far?
Once when I attended a TV show pilot audition, the director asked me to read for a role. About half way through the reading the director interrupted and started applauding, exclaiming “finally someone who can actually act.” That response was so rewarding. I landed the role. This sense of  success is shared in modeling. For the show there were several promotional events and photo shoots. Being part of it was a great confidence builder. I learned so much and had a fun time.


In both careers, you are the focus of attention and people are looking at you. What are the similarities between acting and modeling, and what are the biggest differences? 
The similarity is that your in front of the camera, receiving direction on your performance. Both jobs require you to take instruction well, follow advice and listen carefully. They require you to be very opened minded and try to see things from other perspectives.
As for differences, modeling gives you still images, a single moment and the viewer has to create their own story from the picture. And of course, every interpretation is different. In acting, you are playing out a moving, speaking role with  characters who play out the story for the viewer.


How do you stay in shape?
My workout regimen is five days a week, Monday through Friday, two hours at a time; focusing on certain body parts each day. Although I do abs everyday — OK four days a week. After lifting, I do tread mill for about 30 minutes, then sauna to cleanse and sweat out the toxins. My diet is made up of mainly high proteins, meats but primarily sushi. I eat some carbohydrates, not much. I stay away from sweets, cookies and that stuff.


What do you think are your best physical attributes? Is there any part of your body that you would like to change or aim to work on more? 
I would say my best physical features are my eyes, abs and my back. As you can see from my photo, my back is pretty ripped. The only aspect of my body I would like to change would probably be losing more body fat. I think I could be a little leaner, tighten up my physique. Fortunately, there is not one specific area or weakness, but I think loss of a little more body fat will improve my overall look.



You're based in South Florida. How would you describe the modeling scene there? Would you recommend it to other aspiring models?
I would recommend it, highly. The modeling scene here has lots of jobs, tons of models and a healthy amount of competition. Personally, I try to do my best work and let the rest sort itself out. I love that there are so many opportunities and so glad I made the move down here from Maine, where professional modeling is non-existent. Miami is an awesome place to live and work. There are  so many contacts, connections, options and photographers. It's a great place to start without getting overwhelmed. For any aspiring model moving, living and working here is a wise decision.



What are your ultimate dreams and goals?
My ultimate goal is to be in Hollywood, on the big screen, getting leading roles. I want to be in big-budget films and movies, show the world my craft and skill. I truly believe i can get there in five to ten years. I wanna take acting and modeling all the way to the top and beyond, for the rest of my life.



What is the best way for people to follow your work?

INTERVIEW & VIDEO: Teen Bodybuilder Anthony Stingl Flexes His Way to the Top


Youtube has helped bring a lot of fresh talent to the world's attention. Such is the case with 18-year-old Anthony Stingl, a talented teen bodybuilder who lives in Wales and who has attracted more than 1,000 subscribers in less than a year. He has since launched his own Website, aptly named Mr. Welshy (link below) and begun competing as a bodybuilder.

This muscular talent, who recently was awarded by the National Amateur Bodybuilders Association, is based in Wales. He took time to give modelJOCK.com this exclusive interview, and to share some of his favorite VIDEOS. This is clearly someone to keep your eye on, and we shouldn't be surprised to see even more of him as his career develops.

At what age did you first get interested in working out?
I started working out at the age of 14. I started out by doing cardio once a week during the summer holidays to try and lose weight, and once I turned 15 I started to do more workouts with weights. I’ve always wanted to be big and never wanted to grow up being skinny or fat, so it’s always been a passion of mine.

When and why did you decide to start posting photos and videos online, and what kind of response have you gotten?
I started posting  pictures online about January 2010 and then posting videos in august 2010. I was worried at first at what response I'd get, but I’ve had a lot of positive comments and now have my own webpage where I’m selling videos; it’s not something I'm regretting.




How does it feel to have so many admirers and followers in your own country and abroad?
It’s really a motivator to have people backing you up and making you feel great, [whether] its people that I’ve met personally here in wales or just comments on YouTube or Facebook. I always make sure I have something exciting to say to them on YouTube or update them what I’m doing on Facebook as long as it’s interesting, but I always make sure there’s something worth watching in my videos.






What is your fitness/workout/exercise regimen like? How about your diet?
Right now I’m doing six days a week, about two hours per day, and I have a strict diet of basically chicken and protein shakes every three hours because I have a competition on the 14th of May which will also be my first one [NOTE: HE DID THE COMPETITION AND WON AN AWARD!]. I couldn’t give a definite workout routine because I always like to change it depending on how I feel about it, but I always make sure I lift heavier every time I go to the gym. 




What do you think are your best physical attributes? Is there any part of your body that you would like to change or aim to work on more?
A lot of people would agree that calves and lats are my best feature and id agree, I always get asked how I get my calves so big but even I don’t know it just seems to be a muscle that reacts well to the workout but I’d like to say pecs and arms are looking good at the moment as well.




What are your ultimate dreams and goals?
I’ve already started working on acting and modeling, and have done some photo shoots and was in a music video, I have a photoshoot on thursday the 12th and an audition for a movie as a soldier, but I’d also like to carry on with bodybuilding and just get a big as I can, but it will be a very interesting year for acting and modeling I think — so watch this space.

INTERVIEW: Kevin Gustavson Links Fitness with Poker, Vegas Style


There are lots of male models and men's fitness experts out there. But how many are able to link the principles of poker and gambling with the goals of building muscle and staying fit? 

Kevin Gustavson, for one. While he just recently entered the world of modeling, this Las Vegas-based model has a long-standing dedication to fitness and working out. And he also knows a thing or two about gambling — and he's even helped Vegas-bound gamblers take charge of their health. In this interview, he tells us about the connection. You have a very unique story, since you see a connection between poker and health. What can we learn from poker when we're trying to stay fit?
Yes, I agree with you; my story is unique. I would say part of its uniqueness is composed of an aspect of luck, that I was fortunate to take full advantage of. The main similarity I use when relating poker and improving health is the fact that attaining 100% of either is an impossibility. Sure, you can achieve various goals relating to each, but that doesn't mean new goals won't be in your near future once the initial goals are reached. Some health goals may be [to] maintain a certain body fat percent, lose XX pounds/gain XX pounds, cure diabetes, improve overall health, live to a certain age etc. And some poker goals may be: make $XX/year, bump up to a higher limit (while keeping bankroll management in check), watch XX videos/week to elevate game, reach XX% ROI (rate of investment) for x# of tournaments.



Tell us more about poker and physical fitness.
I’d rather not get involved in discussing complex variables of poker, because just like understanding fitness and nutrition, it takes education and time. That’s the main issue I see with both that I suppose is a huge similarity — people simply seeing both as a short route rather than a long journey. They don't understand that proper education will actually save you much time and effort in the long run, while also providing optimal results in every department.


You've been around a lot of poker players since moving to Vegas from Long Island. Are a lot of them into training and fitness, and how do you get them more into it?
Yes I have. Honestly, all the poker players I have met more than once and would consider either friends or acquaintances — about 20 people — were/are CLUELESS about training and fitness. The main personality [trait] I have found has been extreme laziness, and its 100% justifiable if you truly analyze their lifestyle within the last five years and also understand their ages, etc.


How and at what age did you first get interested in modeling?
Modeling, less than a month. Honestly, I don't even tell many people I am a model, because I'm sooooo new to it. It has only been recently that people told me "dude model," so I made a ModelMayhem profile and its been so awesome since then.



What about fitness — when did that start?
Fitness is a different story. I have always been involved with fitness. But I first started working out at age 13 for basketball weights. I did basketball weights during the 10-month off-season in 8th grade leading to 9th grade, and my training and hard work earned me a varsity spot freshman year. I was 6'2" and 190 as a freshman, so yeah I sure didn't look 15. I never stopped; I was always consistent and dedicated. 


What have been your proudest or most exciting moments so far in the field of modeling?
Well since that composes of the last month, I would say my proudest is the last photo shoot I did in my pool last Friday 5/6/2011, because when I saw one of the photos I had a rare thought relating to how I view myself. I am extremely self-critical relating to pictures, so when I saw a picture and the word "impressed" came to mind, it was really gratifying. An awesome feeling that was like "yeah man, you put the work in, good job." My most exciting is underway, I have a trial shoot for something really cool (not jinxing anything) in June, so wish me luck!


What is your fitness/workout/exercise regimen? How about your diet?
Oh man, this is where you get into KG land.  Some people straight up call me a fitness guru because I am very educated and its basically all I do. I don't have a job, my schedule is a joke, and its always sunny ... so all I do is workout.
My lifting routine is ALWAYS changing and evolving so I won't say specifics, basically a combination of all types of lifting (weights, cables, self body). I stretch routinely and also flex routinely. My diet is perfected. I make super salads (nuts, egg whites, blueberries etc), KG smoothies (greek yogurt, whey, casein, fruits, oats), and only healthy food. Healthy eating is something I want to make the norm in society one day with KG Fitness. My main dream is the birth of KG Fitness, a new type of gym aimed to teach perfection in form.


What do you think are your best physical attributes? Is there any part of your body that you would like to change or aim to work on more? 
I consider myself to be proportionally balanced. There isn't a part of my body I want to change. Work on more intensely or different may be the correct wording for myself. I would say hip/oblique/legs overall. My legs are something that don't concern me though, because the only reason they're lacking is injuries in the past. It’s been constant progress with them for 10 months, stretching has helped a lot. And I have a stronger desire to hit miscellaneous muscles like obliques, simply because my body fat is getting extremely low and those muscles show more which adds a nice cut up look that is very hard to achieve when working out naturally.


When did you move from Long Island to Vegas? How would you describe the modeling scene there in Vegas?
I moved to Long Island to Vegas for one reason, my older brother’s poker success. He satellited from an online tournament to EPT London's Main Event in 2009 for a 5,000-euro buy-in with 700 people and got 1st for about $1 million.  So that was the turning point in my life. I am proud of getting an associates degree before instantly moving out like I initially planned though. No, I don't recommend Vegas for aspiring models at all, unless you REALLY love Vegas, ha ha.



What are your ultimate dreams and goals in terms of modeling and physical fitness?
My ultimate dreams might catch you a bit off guard, but the thing is, I truly believe them all to be true. I have a unique story, but I am probably a more unique individual than my story. My dreams in modeling and physical fitness are to achieve a physique where I am a goal. Meaning my goal is a physique similar to Frank Zane's philosophy on proportions, but I am 6'4" and believe I can surpass him in every aspect. I find it trippy people talk about dudes having the "most idolized physique" 40 years later, I mean considering I'm doing this the right way and we have more education at our fingertips. it should be that much more easy.
I would love to be in GQ for modeling and Men's Health for fitness one day.  My physical goals are like 2-3lbs/muscle year so ~222 at 2/2/2017 at 6.22% body fat would be a realistic goal.


Do you enjoy Vegas’s gambling and the casino scene yourself? What about Vegas’s famous all-you-can eat buffets?
Where I live in Vegas isn't probably what you envision. I live 20 minutes south of the strip near a different town in a gated community. It’s really nice and I’ts awesome that I can be involved with the true Vegas scene whenever I want. I cook all my food in a really nice kitchen and it wouldn't be hard otherwise. I truly eat for the feeling overall, not the feeling of the “during.”  My advice for people heading to the buffet table is simply ask yourself what are you trying to accomplish. I know I was stoked one night to find fruits, oats, and juices at the buffet when I played live poker with my buddies. In the end, you choose your destiny. It is in YOUR hands.



Which hotel on the strip has the highest percentage of guests who look like models?
Hotel on the strip with highest percentage of models — hahaha  — this makes me laugh. So to give you my most honest answer, it HAS to be the casino where I am at because that’s where all the female guest models check in.


What is the best way for people to follow your work?
Probably Twitter and Model Mayhem for now. Like I said, I am VERY new to modeling, but I do consider myself to be "above the curve" on the Internet, so I will be starting a blog very soon and basically let the world see how my nutrition and fitness life unfolds as I experience things.
